The subject of the DePuy recall is the DePuy ASR hip replacement. With many of the DePuy hips, tissue is damaged due to the high level of metal ions that are released by the implant. This excessive release of ions can lead to inflammation, infections and other issues that cause extreme pain and eventually require revision surgery.
Zimmer Durom Hip Cup
The primary issue with the Zimmer hip implant is its failure to bond. It was designed so that bone would grow into the device so that no screws or adhesives would need to be used during installation. This failure to bond has left the Zimmer Durom hip cup loose in the socket, resulting in severe pain when weight is put on the hip. Many Zimmer hip recipients have required revision surgeries to correct the problem.
Before You Sign Any Pre-Revision Surgery Forms
In many cases, the manufacturers are asking the doctors who do the revision surgeries to have patients sign forms allowing for the return of the defective implants to the manufacturer for testing.
