As KSAT San Antonio reports, organ donation can go a long way toward healing for those left behind after an accident or illness. Take Kasey Kaufman's mother, for example, who recently met the two men who have her son's organs - and are alive today because she consented to organ donation.
In 2010, 17-year-old Kasey Kaufman lost his life in a Kerrville car accident.
One year later, Kaufman's mother Rebecca Edwards had a chance to meet the two men who received Kaufman's organs. One has his heart and the other his kidney. As KSAT San Antonio reports, Edwards said, "I have these people and I get to listen to my son's heart. And, even though it's not in his chest, that's still my son's heart. That's still my son's kidney that's still keeping these people living."
DonateLifeTexas.org provides information on organ donation; according to the website, more than 96,000 patients nationwide need some form of organ transplant - and 7,000 of those patients are Texans.
