Surgical resident faces felony DWI charges

A drunk driving accident claimed the life of 19-year-old Samantha Martinez, leading to intoxication manslaughter charges against Texas Tech surgical resident Dr. David Patricio Gonzalez-Gibler.

The 31-year-old Gonzalez-Gibler is said to have been bar-hopping with two teens, Samantha Martinez and 18-year-old Dawnyelle Rios, when he flipped his car off an overpass and Martinez was killed.

As Robin Pyle and Leesha Faulkner report for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Brian Williams of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission says, "We think the doctor bought it for them," referring to alcohol that was consumed at Klusoz Martini Lounge.

Criminal charges for intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault against Gonzalez-Gibler aren't the only legal actions being taken in this case. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is filing administrative charges against the Klusoz Martini Lounge (for serving to an already-intoxicated Gonzalez-Gibler) and the Depot Entertainment District bar (for serving to underage patrons).

As Pyle and Faulkner report, the bars could lose their alcohol permits.
