Pedestrian, a sixth grader, struck and killed on Halloween

"It certainly is a very tragic turn of events," says sheriff's spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo, as Robert Stanton reports for the Houston Chronicle. The accident happened when the boy and his friend jumped out of the back of his father's pickup and raced across the street to reach a Halloween party being held at the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department.

What the boys didn't anticipate was an oncoming Toyota pickup truck.

The boy was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galvenston, where he died of his injuries. The boy's friend, however, survived, though he was injured as well.

As Stanton reports, no charges have been filed in the case, and there is nothing to indicate, based on the available facts, that the 52-year-old man who hit the boys is liable for negligence.

But the accident is another reminder of just how dangerous Halloween can be. There are simply more pedestrians on the road, many of whom are children, which means that any reduction in speed is likely to help in avoiding serious accidents.
