Oil boom good for hotels, bad for traffic

As William Pack reports for the San Antonio Express-News, hoteliers are enjoying the benefits of the oil boom just as much as the oil and gas companies. In terms of hotel revenue, 75 percent of it comes from the most highly-productive Eagle Ford Shale counties alone.

The Eagle Ford Shale cuts a large swath of South Texas land, and those productive oil and gas counties are a shot in the arm for the hospitality industry. "Everything is full," says one city manager, as Pack reports. "If you wanted a room for something next year at this time, you'd have a problem getting it."

But finding a hotel room isn't the only problem.

The caption under a photo provided by the Fuel Fix says: "A steady stream of trucks pass through the small town of Kennedy, Texas..." This is an indication of the problem with fully-booked hotels: traffic, and lots of it.

In other words, the oil boom is certainly good for hoteliers, but bad for traffic, especially for those drivers who find themselves injured by an 18-wheeler or oil tanker from the Eagle Ford Shale.
