TxDOT has launched a drunk driving prevention campaign

Americans grow up learning that drinking and driving is dangerous. Kids are taught this message in elementary schools and are bombarded by reminders throughout their high school years. Safety advocates hope that by teaching children this message early that it will stick with them later in life. However, the message is too often muddied in adulthood. Which is partially why Texans are hurt and killed in drunk driving accidents an average of once every 20 minutes, 365 days a year.

It is simply too easy to accidentally drive drunk. Alcohol metabolizes differently depending on such factors as age, height, weight, gender and whether or not the drinker has eaten recently. As a result, even well-intentioned and seemingly sober adults can discover that they are technically driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) that is over the legal limit of .08.

Partially in response to how difficult it can truly be to understand when one is driving over the legal limit, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched an educational campaign aimed at preventing drunk driving accidents throughout the state.

The campaign itself focuses on the victims of drunk driving accidents, in the hopes that placing faces and stories with the reality of drunk driving will inspire adults to reconnect with the message that drunk driving is both real and dangerous. Safety advocates hope that putting a face on this particular kind of tragedy will help adults to stop drinking much sooner before they get behind the wheel so that they are truly sober by the time they begin driving.
