Texas speed limits place stress on truck tires

Traveling as much distance as possible during a work shift is a common goal shared by most truck drivers. In the world of delivering cargo via big rig trucks, timing is everything. In turn, truck drivers are under pressure to get to where they are going quickly so they can drop their loads and be ready to pick up and deliver still more cargo.

Given this need for speed, it is quite possible that Texas is a favored state for many truck drivers. This is because Texas has the highest speed limit in the nation for truck traffic. In the Lone Star State, there are highways that permit semi-trucks to travel at speeds up to 85 mph.

While it seems like a good deal for truck drivers and trucking companies, Texas' super speed limit may create an extreme hazard for truckers and other road users. The problem is that truck tires are typically built for top sustained speeds of only 75 mph, a full 10 mph slower than the Texas limit.

Driving in excess of the maximum rate of speed can put tremendous structural stress on the tire. This stress can eventually lead to tires blowing out on the road. Truck tire blowouts can lead to serious or even fatal accidents.

Truck drivers and trucking companies have a responsibility to keep their trucks properly maintained. This means that truck tires must be regularly inspected for wear and replaced if necessary. Moreover, truck drivers should know the limitations of their tires and drive at appropriate speeds.

If you or a family member has been injured in an accident that occurred after a truck tire blowout, you may wish to have a Texas personal injury attorney help you with securing compensation. By performing an investigation of the accident, the attorney may be able to demonstrate that the driver or trucking company engaged in negligent practices regarding the safe and proper use of the truck's tires.
