Pedestrians haunted by cars on Halloween

As ABC 15 News reports, the night of October 31 - or Halloween night - is the "deadliest night of the year for pedestrians," according to the American Automobile Association, in terms of car crashes and other accidents.

AAA representative Linda Gorman says, "On Halloween night, it's imperative for adults to be especially vigilant during nighttime hours, when pedestrians are most vulnerable. Whether walking or driving, AAA urges all road users to utilize extra caution, be mindful of their surroundings and celebrate responsibly."

AAA recommends doing the following to stay safe on Halloween:

  • Don't drive through a residential neighborhood if you don't have to, like taking a shortcut to your destination
  • Stay on the lookout for children - especially younger children - who won't be on the lookout for you (they'll be on the lookout for candy)
  • Be mindful of your speed. The slower you're going, the easier it will be for you to avoid a child who runs in front of the car
  • Find a designated driver if you've been drinking
