Hit-and-run driver kills two Mormon missionaries in Texas

Three young Mormon missionaries on their bicycles were struck by the driver of a car who eyewitnesses say was attempting to pass another vehicle. Two of the missionaries were killed; the third survived. The driver and two passengers fled the scene on foot.

In Texas, as pretty much everywhere, leaving the scene of an accident can result in criminal charges.

As Bob Mims reports for the Salt Lake Tribune, the suspected hit-and-run driver, a 32-year-old Mexican national, turned himself over to law enforcement authorities this morning and was to be booked in the Hidalgo County Jail.

The accident occurred at seven on Tuesday evening; the missionaries were wearing helmets and had lights on their bikes when they were hit. It's not clear whether alcohol, reckless driving, or any similar factor pointing toward negligent driving contributed to the accident.

As Mims reports, a Mormon elder said of one of the missionaries, "He was always busy, willing to take time to serve. He was really good with the younger boys in the church and loved to play basketball. We'll miss him very much."
