MADD: Texas gets a 'Three-Star' rating on its DWI laws

According to figures provided by the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving, drinking and driving costs the U.S. more than $132 billion every year. As part of its overall Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, which began in 2006, MADD has just released an interactive state-by-state map of the nation, stacking each state up against the other in a five-criteria rating system.

It should come as no surprise, but MADD says that Texas has the most drunk-driving deaths every year, and gave Texas a three-star rating on the measures our state has taken to combat drunk driving - measures that apply equally to DUI truck accidents as to any other type of drunk-driving incident.

Texas scores well on administrative driver's license revocation (it's worse for drunk truck drivers, who stand to lose their commercial driver's license), tougher penalties for those drivers convicted of DWI with a child in the car, and the "no-refusal weekend," which some areas of Texas have expanded to no-refusal every-day-of-the-week.

On the other hand, Texas does not score well by not requiring the ignition interlock system for all drivers convicted of DWI - even first-time DWI - and the absence of roadside sobriety checkpoints.

MADD argues that all of these measures combined would go a long way in reducing fatalities from alcohol-related car or truck wrecks.
