“You have two kids all of a sudden in wheelchairs. They’ve lost their parents. They’ve been through so much.” This is a quote from an uncle to two boys who were paralyzed after a distracted driver swerved into the lane and caused a head-on car wreck in Texas, as Michelle Koidin Jaffee reports for the San Antonio Express-News.
In this case, the driver was looking for a DVD, and it killed the boys’ parents in the process. And in others, such as in the texting and trucking cases that we often handle, the driver has taken his eyes off the road for just a few moments.
As the uncle said, “I would want people to know that in that split second of not paying attention, they could devastate a family.”
The act of driving and not paying attention takes many forms. In some, it’s looking for a DVD. In others, it’s texting while driving. And, in others, it’s falling asleep behind wheel. In those cases, the driver shouldn’t have been behind the wheel in the first place.
