As Lauren Lea reports for WOAI San Antonio news, Karnes County police have a problem on their hands when it comes to high-speed pursuits. Karnes County Sheriff David Jalufka said, “Because the roads are in such bad condition, either they are going to be wrecked out or we’re going to wreck out trying to chase them.”
Jalufka’s referring to undocumented immigrants traveling the South Texas smuggling routes, many of which are now “crumbling” due to the Eagle Ford Shale 18-wheeler traffic.
According to Lea, one of the biggest Karnes County accidents involved no less than 19 people, two of which were killed, many more taken to local hospitals by chopper and ambulance. When the police have to give chase after undocumented immigrants – which apparently happens once per month, now probably more than that – the crumbling roads heighten the danger for all involved.
There are more police on the roads generally due to both undocumented immigrants and the trucks going to and from the Eagle Ford Shale.
