Perhaps this fatality is only the first of many car and truck accidents on the new Texas roadway with an 85-mph speed limit.
According to NBC News, the 41-mile stretch of roadway in Texas (Texas State Highway 130 between San Antonio and Austin) had its first auto fatality on Sunday afternoon. The driver of a Honda Civic entered the roadway and soon collided with a Chevy Tahoe, resulting in the Honda driver’s death, with minor injuries to the occupants of the Tahoe.
The police don’t know yet what caused the crash or how fast the cars were traveling when the crash occurred, but plenty of sources speculate that raising the speed limit will inevitably lead to more fatal motor vehicle accidents.
Whether or not the driver of the Honda Civic was “speeding” (or simply going the 85 mph speed limit) is yet to be determined.
The toll booths also opened on the same day of the fatal accident. As NBC News reports, the cost of driving the full length of the toll road will be from $6.17 to $8.21, depending on whether or not the driver has an electronic toll tag.
