Federal agency goes after two truck companies for safety violations

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, a governmental agency with the primary mission of preventing injuries and deaths associated with commercial trucks, threw around its weight at the end of 2012 by shutting down two trucking companies for violating important safety regulations.

The two shuttered truck companies were Ben Gordon Enterprises and LEX Express, Inc.

Here's why they were shut down:

  • Drivers didn't have valid commercial driver's licenses
  • Drivers had a history of DUI arrests
  • Drivers did not have current medical certificates
  • No records of inspections and maintenance on vehicles
  • No accident registers
  • No files on drivers and their qualifications

It's not clear whether or not these two companies can "rehabilitate" themselves and begin operating again. What is clear, however, is the FMCSA felt strongly that both companies put other motorists' lives in danger because of continued safety violations.

"The FMCSA is very clear about its safety and compliance requirements," Anne S. Ferro said, who heads up the agency.
