Flooding might increase risk of pipeline accidents

As Matthew Brown reports for the Associated Press, the law regarding how far down pipelines are allowed to be buried under riverbeds (four feet) makes pipeline accidents involving flooding more likely.

There are a few common things that can go wrong when it comes to pipelines, from explosions to spills, and any law that makes things safer is generally a good thing, which is why some state lawmakers are turning their attention to pipeline safety below riverbeds.

The Transportation Department, as Brown reports, has released a statement detailing pipeline spills since 1993. These spills have occurred in several states, including Texas, and are said to result in millions of gallons of crude oil and other materials being dumped into the water.

Spills only account for one percent of all pipeline accidents, but the environmental cost is great, as well as the threat to human health and safety.

There are "pretty clear holes in pipeline oversight when it comes to flooding," Brown quotes one lawmaker.
