At Least It's Progress: ATA Reports Safety Improvements in 2012

The Law Offices of Tyler & Peery

As a leading organization in the trucking industry, the American Trucking Association plays an important role in trying to reduce the rate of serious crashes that currently plague Texas roadways. One of the ATA's goals involves a list of what observers describe as "20 critical steps" to help cut accident rates. The ATA recently announced that it has made progress in several of these 20 areas.

While it is certainly disappointing that the trucking industry is not moving ahead faster, these improvements are a welcome development. Hopefully they will have a real impact on dangerous truck crashes.

The areas of progress involve some important initiatives. One of the steps involved guidelines for safe use of technology. Distracted driving is a common factor in many crashes and a better understanding of these risks on the part of drivers will hopefully encourage some to think twice about texting behind the wheel. Two of the other progress areas involve national systems for locating medical examiners and screening driver candidates.

Some other areas remain untouched, however. For example, the ATA did not make any progress on advocating for a safer national speed limit or developing programs to deal with aggressive driving.

Hopefully 2013 will see more progress on these goals - in the meantime, an experienced personal injury lawyer can help the victims of trucking accidents explore their legal options.
