Taking "selfies" while driving in Texas not illegal but dangerous

Modern technology has ushered in an era wherein large numbers of the San Antonio population can be constantly interconnected via a vast array of networks. The devices used to make this interconnectivity possible have many important and useful features. However, use of these devices while on the road can pull focus from the task at hand. The result can be a motor vehicle accident caused by distracted driving. The effects can be devastating.

Accidents caused by persons driving while talking on cell phones have long been an issue. The advent of phones with the capability to send and receive text messages further compounded the distracted driver problem. We can now add the so-called selfie to the list of diverting things people do while behind the wheel.

A selfie is a picture you take of yourself and millions of motorists are taking them while driving. This kind of picture is actually called a driving selfie. Those indulging in the practice of taking driving selfies are posting their pictures on various social media sites.

Currently, there is no law against taking a selfie while driving in Texas. However, if an accident occurs due to a driver snapping a selfie instead of paying attention to the road, prosecution for reckless behavior can be the result.

While technology is constantly providing new solutions to problems, it can also introduce new ways to interfere with people's attention. A driver with compromised attention is an accident waiting to happen.

Taking a photo while driving can end with a collision. If you are in an accident with someone who was distracted for any reason, that person could be held liable for his or her dangerous actions. A discussion with an attorney who handles cases involving motor vehicle accidents is one possible first step.
