What to do immediately after a truck accident, part 1

Being in an accident with a big-rig truck could not only subject you to physical trauma, but your body's fight or flight mechanism may also kick in, giving you a rush of adrenaline. As such, it would not be surprising if you were disoriented and upset in the immediate aftermath of the collision.

But once you have regained some clarity, there are some steps you should take in response to the accident. The first thing you want to do is check and see if you or anyone else involved in the accident has been injured. Immediately call for emergency medical help for anyone who needs it. Unless absolutely necessary, do not move anyone who is suffering from neck or back pain or is unconscious, but rather allow the medical professionals to attend to them.

Next, you may want to contact the police and inform them of the accident, especially if there have been serious or fatal injuries and extensive property damage. Once the police have been notified, you must stay at the scene. This is very important as you could be criminally charged for leaving the area.

At this point, there are a number of things you may want to do that involve gathering information about the accident. First, you want to get as much information as possible about the truck and its driver. This would include the driver's name, license number and insurance information. Get the truck's identification number and license plate number. You also want to get information about the company the driver is working for.

What is described in this post is only the beginning of what could be a very complex process of pursuing compensation for you or any family members who were injured in the accident. But it takes more than just gathering information to ensure getting a fair settlement. It is important that the information is properly disseminated and used to build a strong case.

An experienced Texas truck accident attorney may be able to help you piece your case together and represent your interests in making claims or filing a lawsuit.
