Laredo Sees Most Border Truck Traffic in the U.S.
The North American Trade Agreement is responsible for ushering in a high volume of truck traffic from Mexico through the United States, up into Canada and back again. You can see these big rigs running on highways all across the country. Many of these truck drivers must traverse long distances while on very tight schedules. And as it turns out, Laredo, Texas is one of the busiest crossing points along the border between the United States and Mexico.
In fact, statistics indicate that in 2015, Laredo was tops among all 26 ports of entry located at the border. In excess of 2 million trucks crossed over using the Laredo port. To put this in perspective, the border port in Otay Mesa, California, had the second highest volume of truck traffic with over 800,000 trucks crossing into the U.S.
Of course, motorists in Laredo are likely well aware of the potential hazards presented by this high rate of truck traffic. Trucks that move cargo such long distances endure a lot of wear and tear. And if the drivers or their companies fail to properly maintain these vehicles, they may not be roadworthy. A truck with worn out brakes or balding tires could be a serious accident just waiting to happen.
Likewise, drivers who must stay on the road for such long stretches could suffer the symptoms of fatigue. And as we know, if a drowsy truck driver should nod off behind the wheel for mere seconds, the results could be devastating.
If you have been involved in a truck accident in or around Laredo, you might want to contact an attorney. This is especially true if you or someone you love suffered injuries in the accident. An experienced personal injury attorney could help handle your claim so you can begin your recovery.
