Texas DPS Finds Tire Problem in Goliad County Pickup Truck Accident

The Law Offices of Tyler & Peery

As Christopher Sherman reports for the Associated Press, the Texas Department of Public Safety has been engaged in an ongoing investigation of the recent single-vehicle truck accident in Goliad County in South Texas that resulted in the deaths of 14 people.

And according to the DPS, it appears as though the cause was some sort of tire defect, in that the right front tire "came apart," indicating a possible issue with maintenance, which caused the driver of the pickup truck to lose control and crash into a grove of trees off the highway.

The pickup truck - a large white Ford F-250 - was apparently extremely overloaded with people, most or all of whom were immigrants thought to be illegally in the U.S. This is one of the worst accidents involving immigrant smuggling, as Sherman reports, and it involved men and women, boys and girls, who were crammed into both the bed and cab of the truck.

It's tough to say whether the overloading may have had something to do with the crash, though DPS may just as well make that finding in the weeks to come.
