$3.58M – Sutherland Springs Shooting Incident

Tyler & Peery Secure $3.58 Million Verdict for Sutherland Springs Shooting Victims Against U.S. Government

In a significant legal outcome, The Law Offices of Tyler & Peery in San Antonio recovered $3,575,927.60 for their clients in the Sutherland Springs shooting case, tried in Federal Court against the United States. Represented by Dennis Peery, the plaintiffs were part of a larger verdict where Federal District Court Judge Xavier Rodriguez ordered the U.S. government to pay $230 million for its role in the tragic shooting at Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church on November 5, 2017.

The shooting, the deadliest in Texas history, resulted in 26 fatalities and 22 serious injuries. The verdict will provide compensation to more than 80 family members of victims and survivors who filed suit against the government. In April 2021, Judge Rodriguez determined the Air Force was 60% responsible due to its failure over three decades to report violent felons to the FBI criminal background check system, enabling one such felon to illegally obtain the weapon used in the attack.

Judge Rodriguez’s evaluation of the victims’ losses was aligned with established law in Texas state and federal courts for similar grievous loss cases. He acknowledged the profound challenge of quantifying the pain and suffering experienced by the families, noting that monetary compensation is the only remedy the civil justice system offers. He emphasized that while the method for valuing human life varies, it remains an unsatisfying task to truly measure the worth of the families’ pain.
